A lifetime ago, I delved into the ternary rabbit hole[1], developing a bunch of tools and math[2][3] for the adjacent problem ad-hoc (balanced) trinary bit twiddling in numbers encoded as binary, while retaining the ability to do fast arithmetic on the binary representation.

It's a fun rabbit hole. I'm glad it's (seemingly) finding some practical use cases.
